The Chicken and the Egg: Which comes first: Diversity or Inclusion?
Most industries continue to face challenges making progress with their inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) strategies. Employers often point to their recruiting programs aimed at attracting individuals from diverse backgrounds. However, studies have found that diverse candidates are exiting their jobs at higher rates than those entering. This means that despite their efforts to attract diverse talent, the core issue remains unaddressed: workplaces are not inclusive of people deemed 'different.'
The Chicken and the Egg lays out the case for why employers should be putting more effort into creating inclusive, equitable and accessible workplaces rather than focusing on the diversity of their workforce. Based on his book Birds of All Feathers: Doing Diversity and Inclusion Right and his extensive experience in inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility, Michael Bach shares practical examples of how inclusion should come first, which will allow the diversity to follow.
